John Sutton, on the cusp of Origin selection, will today face off against Bulldogs five eighth Josh Reynolds for the vacant position on the NSW bench for State of Origin I.
Personally, I don’t think this is necessary. John Sutton is the logical choice for the last spot on the bench and he can be NSW game breaker. Sutton is a big unit who plays a rep style game, especially close to the tryline. He has an outstanding short passing game and can run effectively in heavy traffic.
Against a tiring Qld forward pack, Sutton would wreak havoc close to the line. He has versatility, confidence and has waited long enough to taste rep honours at an elite level. He is Qld’s worst nightmare and if used properly, can be the difference between the two sides.
This is no sleight against Josh Reynolds and his time will come. Having him in camp will benefit the Bulldogs this season but he is not quite there yet. I thought he was at the start of the season but he has been a little below what I expected of him this year.
Reynolds does have the competitive fire for Origin but the maturity level isn’t where it needs to be…yet. He will be better off for the experience and his confidence level will grow enormously knowing he is on the cusp of Origin selection. A wise move by Daley that should yield dividends for years to come for NSW.
